The Midnight Gang will run at Chichester Festival Theatre from Saturday 13th October - Saturday 3rd November. Children will need to be available from the 3rd September - 3rd November inclusive, with no holidays booked (all dates subject to change).
A bang on the head during a cricket match at his boarding school has landed twelve-year-old Tom in the children’s ward of the spooky Lord Funt Hospital.
Luckily, he’s not on his own with the child-hating Matron and the scary-looking Porter. George, Amber, Robin and Sally are in there too, and they’re not taking things lying down. When the lights go out and the clock strikes twelve, they’re off. But will they let new boy Tom join their forbidden midnight adventures through the hospital’s labyrinthine realm?
This inventive tale of fun, friendship and the importance of kindness is adapted from David Walliams’s biggest selling children’s book of 2016.
This new stage version is by Bryony Lavery, whose adaptations include Chichester’s hit family shows The Hundred and One Dalmatians (2014) and A Christmas Carol (2015), with music and lyrics by renowned musician and composer Joe Stilgoe(The Jungle Book, 2017).
Director Dale Rooks’s production of Michael Morpurgo’s Running Wild (Festival 2015) won the UK Theatre Award for Best Show for Children and Young People; she later co-directed the play for Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and a UK tour.
ALL CHILDREN SHOULD BE STRONG SINGERS. ALL BOYS SHOULD HAVE UNBROKEN VOICES.
TOM (Male) - 11-13YRS - UNDER 5FT
A quiet, timid young boy that does not want to stand out. Attends boarding school - very well to do. Geeky, nerdy, small, the kid always left out from the cool gang, feels abandoned by his parents who work abroad and left to fend for himself. He desperately wants to be included in any and all adventures as he has been left out so often. This can lead to him making decisions that are slightly torturous for him, but ultimately wants to make sure that his new-found friends are safe and happy. Starts off as quite timid but then is determined to break out of that and go on these big adventures. Ends up becoming a bit of a hero.
GEORGE (Male) - 10-12YRS - UNDER 5FT
Has tonsillitis. A corpulent boy who is always eating - he loves chocolate! . Cockney accent. Can take him time to get the drift of things like jokes. A bit of a cheeky chappy with a mischievous side to him. His father is in prison.
SALLY (Female) - 9-12YRS - UNDER 5FT
Mainly bed-bound. Sleeps a lot and quietly observes everything. An intelligent, smart young girl with a very sweet and caring nature. Quite weak physically from what is, presumably, chemotherapy treatment that she is going through. She is seemingly not treated very kindly by any of the other kids at first but she has a heart of gold and quickly forgives them. She has a wicked sense of humour. Although she is physically frail she is mentally strong and sometimes quite bolshy.
AMBER (Female) - 10 - 13YRS - UNDER 5FT
Broken both arms & legs so is in a wheelchair. She is the gang leader. Very dominant/bossy - always wants to be the one in charge. She takes credit for ideas that are not hers. A bit of a feminist - she is taking control to prove how strong she is as a young woman and that the boys are actually quite weak and useless! She wants to be an explorer and achieve great things.
ROBIN (Male) - 10-13YRS - UNDER 5FT
Recovering from op to save his eyesight. A sarcastic & dry-witted young man. Currently unable to see. Comes across as more intelligent than the others and that includes the adults. Has a sassy side.
